Getting Started with
Naviance Family Connection
To access WNA’s Naviance Family Connection, a web-based
software service designed specifically for college planning with students and
their families, go to http://connection.naviance.com/wna.
Family Connection is a comprehensive website that
students and parents can use to help make decisions about college. Family
Connection is linked with “Counselor’s Office,” a software service that we use
in our office to track and analyze data about colleges, in order to provide
up-to-date information that is specific to WNA.
Each student will be assigned his or her own personal
password-protected account. Parents of the class of 2009 are also provided
access. After your initial visit to the Naviance website, you can personalize
your password. You will have the ability to see individualized displays of
academic information and test scores. You will be able to search colleges and
start a list of potential schools you would like to explore more in
depth.
If you would like to view Family Connection without
registering, you may do so as a guest. Use the “guest entrance.” You will not
be able to view your child's information as a guest, only when you have
registered as a parent. Enter “gorams” as your password (all lower case) and
you will be inside a powerful college counseling tool. Have fun
exploring!
Once in the system, you will find at the left side of
your screen a column of options. Explore freely. Under About College, we think you may find
it most useful to begin with these:
College Search:
Here you can conduct your own extensive searches. Start broadly by limiting
your preferences to a few important factors (e.g., size, location, selectivity,
major, or sporting interest.) Later you can specify major and sport and choral
group and study abroad....The pickier you get, the fewer the matches.
College Look Up:
Furnishes a basic profile of the college, including a link to its homepage on
the Web. Enter part or the college’s entire name, and then double click the
blue hyper-link which appears on the next screen. (If you type “Whit” for
example, you’ll get a list showing Whittier, Whitman, and Whitworth, among
others.)
Scattergrams:
For each college
you can view a graph of GPA/test scores for accepted students compared to the
average. Please note, scattergrams are available only for schools
with three or more applicants in the past three years. If a college has fewer
than three applications from WNA, the scattergram and detailed statistics will
not be displayed. If a scattergram has only one acceptance or one denial, it
will not display even if the minimum number of data points is available. The
data will include this year’s graduating class once the seniors have made their
final college decision. Additionally, these scattergrams reflect only grade point average and standardized
test scores and do not reveal the many subjective factors that also play a role in college
admission.
Visit Schedule:
This link offers an up to date calendar of college visits to WNA. This schedule
is fluid—it may change at any time as colleges adjust schedules, so check back
often.
Once you have checked out these sites, continue on to
About Me. This is
where your personal information is stored; it can be updated at any time
throughout the college search process. Please
review:
My Profile: Lists
personal information, address, phone, e-mail, parents information, test scores,
etc. Please check for accuracy.
My Checklist:
Track the
progress of college application benchmarks.
My College: After
you have gone through the College Search, Look Up areas, My College helps you
start to develop your list of prospective colleges. This list can be modified
at any time as you add and subtract schools you are interested in applying
to.
Class of 2009 – Junior Year
