STEPHEN J. BROTSCHUL NAMED WEST NOTTINGHAM ACADEMY'S

NEXT HEAD OF SCHOOL

November 20, 2011

Colora, Maryland...The Trustees of West Nottingham Academy have unanimously named Stephen J. Brotschul the next head of school. Mr. Brotschul’s appointment is the culmination of a national search process that began last spring when the current head of school, D. John Watson, announced he would be leaving after ten years at the Academy. An inclusive process that included every constituency of the school, the search process brought many inspirational and highly qualified candidates forward for consideration. Mr. Brotschul emerged from the pool as the clear choice. Search committee chair and trustee, Kendall Cameron, describes Stephen as, “a visionary school leader who is committed to boarding schools, and in particular, to the mission of West Nottingham Academy.” Paul McIntyre, board president, says “Stephen has the energy, passion and experience it takes to lead West Nottingham through the challenges and opportunities of the Academy’s future.”

Currently the Associate Headmaster at The Kiski School in Saltsburg, Pennsylvania, Mr. Brotschul has fifteen years of experience as an educator in independent schools. He’s served in a variety of roles including Dean of Students, Director of Admission, and Art teacher. Stephen attended The Hill School, graduating in 1990 after which he earned his B.S. in Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning from the University of Massachusetts and a Masters Degree in Administration and Educational Leadership from Cal State San Bernardino. Stephen has worked at the Webb Schools in Claremont, California, CEDU Schools in Running Springs, California, The Leelanau School in Glen Arbor, Michigan and The Kiski School. He has a broad range of experience with fundraising, strategic planning, program creation and implementation, residential life, school finance, faculty development, school admissions, teaching and coaching.

Christopher A. Brueningsen, head of Kiski and former trustee at West Nottingham Academy, writes, “Without question, Stephen is one of the most talented schoolmen I have encountered in my career in independent school education.” He goes on to say, “He sees the big picture, understands the importance of executing a well-crafted plan and, above all things, he answers the call for the brand of leadership that’s needed to manage a school in today’s rapidly changing world.”

Stephen enjoys photography, painting and spending time with his two young sons, Severin (10 years old) and Dorian (8 years old). Stephen’s wife, Amy, teaches French and English as a Second Language and is currently spending the year participating in a Fulbright Program Classroom Teacher Exchange in Lille, France.

The Brotschuls will arrive on campus and Stephen will begin his leadership of the Academy in July of 2012.

-WNA-
